Karen Eats — LA Restaurant Health Scores
How do I use Karen Eats?
Karen Eats works as a Share Extension. Here's how:
- Open Google Maps, Apple Maps, or Yelp
- Find any restaurant in LA County
- Tap the Share button
- Select Karen Eats from the list of apps
- The health inspection score card appears instantly
I don't see Karen Eats in the share sheet
First, make sure you've opened the Karen Eats app at least once after installing — this loads the inspection database. If you still don't see it:
- In the share sheet, scroll the apps row to the right and tap More
- Find Karen Eats in the list and tap Edit to add it to your favorites
- If it doesn't appear at all, try restarting your phone
A restaurant I searched for wasn't found
Karen Eats covers restaurants inspected by LA County Department of Public Health and the City of Pasadena. Some cities within the county run their own health departments and are not yet included:
- Long Beach — separate health department, not yet covered
- Vernon — separate health department, not yet covered
If a restaurant is missing but should be in LA County, it's possible the county hasn't published recent inspection data for that location.
How are scores calculated?
Karen Eats uses a proprietary scoring algorithm (0–100) based on publicly available inspection data. The score considers:
- Most recent inspection grade and score
- Severity and type of violations (pest/rodent citations are weighted heavily)
- Score trends over multiple inspections
- How recently the restaurant was inspected
- Any history of closures
This is not a county-issued score. It's our independent analysis of publicly available data.
Where does the data come from?
All inspection data comes from official public sources:
Data is updated weekly.
